The Making of My Middle Child

I wrote a guest post for the On Parenting Column on the Washington Post.com about Brendan's transition to being the middle child. I would love for you to take a look.

What a great article! Congrats on getting it published. I agree with you that there are definite birth order traits, and we see them occur and shift as we have more children. Keep up the great writing!

I loved your article and congrats. I, too, have a middle guy (older twin siblings, and a brother just 16 months younger).

My middle child's personality traits are a bit different than the ones you listed. He's incredibly bright, a button pusher (he knows exactly what to do to make his siblings crazy). highly competitive, focused when he needs to be or is interested in something, argumentative and always feels the need to be right.

Could be the result of being a middle child. Could just be the result of belonging to a big, crazy family. Who really knows?

Again, congratulations.

Thanks for a great article. I have three kids - a boy 5, girl 3 and girl 19 months. The poor middle child does get shafted a bit despite every attempt to give her more cuddles. I too try to reassure myself that she has two siblings. She tends to tantrum more than the others and be more of a loner. She is happy but different than her siblings. Nice to know other people have the same experiences.
